The city of Thessaloniki in Macedonia, Greece, for several centuries the second-most important city of the Byzantine Empire, played an important role for Christianity during the Middle Ages and was decorated by impressive buildings. In 1988, fifteen monuments of Thessaloniki were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This site comprises several churches (including the White Tower and Hagios Demetrios (stamps), constructed from the 4th to the 15th century, city walls from the early Byzantine period, and the Rotunda, commissioned in the 4th century by the Roman Empire Galerius and later converted into a church.
