BRAZIL

CZECH REPUBLIC

In this cover, the 12 kc stamp (on the right corner) celebrates the Litomysl Castle. Litomyšl Castle is one of the largest Renaissance castles in the Czech Republic. It is owned by the Czech state. It is located in the centre of the town of Litomyšl and was declared a UNESCO Site in 1999. Litomyšl Castle is an outstanding example of the arcade castle, a type of building first developed in Italy and modified in the Czech lands to create an evolved form of special architectural quality. High-Baroque features were added to this castle in the 18th century.

SPAIN

A nice UNESCO cover from Spain with a single stamp issued in 2021 celebrating the Colosseum of Rome (Italy). Rome, center of the Roman Empire and later, from the 4th century, of the Christian world is home to a large number of major monuments of antiquity, including of course the Colosseum. The Colosseum is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, just east of the Roman Forum and is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheater in the world today, despite its age. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian (r. 69–79 AD) in 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus (r. 79–81).

ICELAND

A nice UNESCO cover from Iceland with one single stamp issued in 2013, celebrating the volcanic island of Surtsey, inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Surtsey ("Surtr's island" in Icelandic) is a volcanic island located in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago off the southern coast of Iceland. Surtsey is the southernmost point of Iceland. It was formed in a volcanic eruption which began 130 metres (430 feet) below sea level, and reached the surface on 14 November 1963. The eruption lasted until 5 June 1967, when the island reached its maximum size of 2.7 km2 (1.0 sq mi).

SERBIA

Another nice cover from Serbia, depicting 4 different stamps with paintings in Studenica Monastery. The Studenica Monastery, established in the late 12th century by Stefan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Serb state, is the largest and richest of Serbia’s Orthodox monasteries. Its two principal monuments, the Church of the Virgin and the Church of the King, both built of white marble, enshrine priceless collections of 13th- and 14th-century Byzantine painting. The Studenica Monastery is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986.

PORTUGAL

A cover from Portugal, depicting 2 stamps with motives related with the town of Angra do Heroísmo (Azores Islands): the historic Cafe "Athanasio" and the Angra Cathedral. Angra do Heroísmo, or simply Angra, is a city and municipality on Terceira Island, Portugal, and one of the three capital cities of the Azores. Founded in 1478, Angra was historically the most important city in the Azores, as seat of the Bishop of the Azores, government entities, and having previously served as the capital city of Portugal, during the Liberal Wars. The population in 2011 was 35,402,[in an area of 239.00 km². It was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983

GERMANY

Another UNESCO cover from Germany with 3 stamps celebrating the "Bauhaus" buildings and its sites in Weimar, Dessau and Bernau. Founded in 1919 in Weimar, the Bauhaus was the most influential art school of the 20th century. The buildings designed by the masters of the Bauhaus are fundamental representatives of Classical Modernism. The joint heritage site includes the Bauhaus school buildings in Weimar and the Haus am Horn, Weimar; the Bauhaus Dessau building, the Meisterhäuser (where senior staff lived)and the Laubenganghäuser ('Houses with Balcony Access'); and the ADGB Trade Union School in Bernau bei Berlin. All this complex is inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

SPAIN

This UNESCO cover from Spain celebrates the Roman Walls of Lugo in Galicia province, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The walls built to protect the Roman town of Lucus (Lugo) in the 3rd century remain entirely intact and are the best remaining example in Western Europe.

SWITZERLAND

This UNESCO cover from Switzerland celebrates the site called "Three Castles, Defensive Wall and Ramparts of the Market Town of Bellinzone". Inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, the fortifications at Bellinzona protected the entrance to the Ticino valley and in turn the access to one of the most important Alpine passes, leading to north Italy. The bulk of the fortifications dates to the 15th century, though some parts are centuries older. The property comprises two castles, Castelgrande and Montebello, which are connected by walls, and a third castle, Sasso Corbaro, which was built on an isolated rocky promontory. The site is in an excellent state of conservation.

GERMANY

A nice UNESCO cover from Germany, depicting a set of 2 stamps issued in 2007. The stamp on the left shows the House of Blackheads in Riga, Latvia and the stamps on the right the City Hall of Stralsund, Germany. The Historic Centre of Riga is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. Riga, founded in 1201, was a major Hanseatic city from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Not many houses remain from that period, as they were destroyed by fire or war. Later, Riga saw a rapid expansion in the 19th and early 20th century, when many Art Nouveau buildings were constructed. Riga has the highest concentration of buildings in this style in Europe. The Historic Centers of Stralsund and Wismar are also inscribed as UNESCO world hertitage sites since 2002. Like Riga, the two towns were major Hanseatic League trading centres in the 14th and 15th centuries. They then served as defensive and administrative centres for Sweden two hundred years later, notably during the Thirty Years' War. The architectural styles from both of these periods remain and are well-preserved.

SWITZERLAND

A nice UNESCO cover from Switzerland, celebrating the Old City of Berne, inscribed at Unesco World Heritage Centre since 1983. Berne was founded in the 12th century on a hill site surrounded by the Aare River from three sides. Over centuries, the city developed following an exceptionally coherent planning concept, thus retaining its original character. The medieval city saw the introduction of water fountains in the 16th century and the renovation and rebuilding of older buildings in the 18th century.

SWITZERLAND

A nice UNESCO cover from Switzerland with 4 stamps celebrating the "Lavaux, Vineyard Terraces", inscribed as a World Heritage site since 2007. Lavaux is a region in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland, in the district of Lavaux-Oron. Lavaux consist of 830 hectares of terraced vineyards that stretch for about 30 km along the south-facing northern shores of Lake Léman. Although there is some evidence that vines were grown in the area in Roman times, the actual vine terraces can be traced back to the 11th century, when Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries controlled the area. It benefits from a temperate climate, but the southern aspect of the terraces with the reflection of the sun in the lake and the stone walls gives a mediterranean character to the region. The main wine grape variety grown here is the Chasselas. Under cantonal law, the vineyards of Lavaux are protected from development. Since July 2007, Lavaux is a UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

This UNESCO cover from Germany celebrates the Monastic island of Reichenau in Lake Konstanz (Bodensee), declared a world heritage site in 2000. The site includes traces of the Benedictine monastery, founded in 724, which exercised remarkable spiritual, intellectual and artistic influence throughout the surrounding region. The churches of St Mary and Marcus, St Peter and St Paul, and St George, were mainly built between the 9th and 11th centuries. Their wall paintings and decorations show an impressive artistic activity.

SWITZERLAND

This UNESCO cover from Switzerland celebrates the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona, inscribed as a natural UNESCO site since 2008. The Glarus Alps feature a major thrust fault, a geological phenomenon where older rocks are carried onto younger layers in the process of mountain building. GERMANY

This UNESCO cover from Germany celebrates 1000 years of St. Michaels Church in Hildesheim, inscribed at UNESCO World Heritage since 1985. The site consists of two churches in Hildesheim. The Ottonian romanesque St Michael's Church was built between 1010 and 1020. Inside it is decorated with a notable wooden ceiling, painted stucco-work, and the Bernward Column.
